Icelandic Language Scholarship -- Post-secondary

Deadline

 

Applications will be accepted no later than 60 days prior to the start of the class or session.

Criteria

  • Must be an American citizen at least 18 years of age and a member of the INLUS either individually, through a family membership, or through a member club.

  • Applicant has been accepted by an educational post-secondary institution in Iceland or the United States and will be working on Icelandic as a second language, Translation Studies in Icelandic, or similar.

  • Applicant has completed the Scholarship Application form.

  • Two Letters of Recommendation attesting to the applicant’s character, educational interests, volunteerism, and related aptitudes must be submitted with the application.

Scholarship Payment, Permissions, and Presentations

  • All recipients must grant INLUS permission to use their photo and name in all official INLUS publications and promotional materials. 

  • Recipients are expected to give a presentation at their local Icelandic club, one close to them, and/or online at an INLUS webinar.

Examples of appropriate programs:

The University of Iceland 
The University of Iceland offers more intensive courses for those who want to master the Icelandic language by offering a full BA program in Icelandic as a second language, and a shorter practical Icelandic for International Students course.

The University of Akureyri
The University of Akureyrioffers a 6ECTS course every semester in Icelandic for its international degree seeking students and exchange students. The focus is on giving students a comprehensive insight into the Icelandic language, especially written and spoken Icelandic.

Mímir Símenntun 
Mímiris a learning center which offers courses in beginners, intermediate and advanced Icelandic for foreigners throughout the year. 

Summer courses:

University of Iceland - The Árni Mangússon Institue
The ÁrniMagnússonInstitute organizes an international summer course in modern Icelandic and Icelandic culture in July every year. It is open to anyone, but it primarily intended towards university students of languages and literature. 

University of Iceland and University of Minnesota
This joint course is offered to students in North America. It consists of three weeks taught at UoM and then three weeks tuition at the University of Iceland. It is also run by the ÁrniMagnússonInstitute.
